The Bank of Canada has reduced its key interest rate by 0.25%, bringing it to 2.25%. It's the second straight cut. Governor Tiff Macklem noted the move reflects ongoing economic weakness and contained inflation. At 2.25%, rates are now at the lower end of the Bank’s “neutral range,” where borrowing costs are neither stimulating nor restricting the economy. Macklem also highlighted the impact of U.S. trade uncertainty and protectionism, adding that policymakers are cautious about what comes next.
Meanwhile, in the U.S., the Federal Reserve also cut rates by 0.25% and restarted limited Treasury purchases to support liquidity.
Lower rates may offer relief for homeowners and businesses, but inflation remains a concern.
